In this tutorial you will learn how to create a text effect that works great for dark, almost gothic looking text effect. You have seen this effect used all over the place on Halloween brochures for haunted houses, and even a few movie posters.
Here is what you will learn how to create throughout this tutorial:

Step 8.)
Press CTRL + J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer.
Go to Filter->Stylize->Glowing Edges, and apply the following settings:

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to "Color Dodge":

Press CTRL + E on your keyboard to merge these two layers together.
Name this layer "Base Effect" as we'll refer back to it in a few steps.
Press CTRL + J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer.
Press CTRL + L on your keyboard to open the Layers Adjustment tool, and apply the following settings:

Press CTRL + J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer.
Change the Blending Mode of this layer to "Linear Dodge":

Click on the layer named "Base Effect" to select it, and press CTRL + J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer.
Move this layer above all other layers in the layer pallet by clicking it and dragging it to the top of the layers pallet window.
Press CTRL + L on your keyboard to open up the Levels Adjustment tool and apply the following settings:
Press CTRL + U on your keyboard to desaturate this layer.

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to "Luminosity":

Select and merge all of the layers. Adobe PS 7: Click on the topmost layer, and press CTRL + E on your keyboard 4 times to merge all layers together. Adobe PS CS(2): Hold the SHIFT key down on your keyboard, and click each layer (other than the background) and press CTRL + E on your keyboard.
Double click this layer, and apply the following blending options:
Outer Glow:
Bevel & Emboss:
Stroke:
And that concludes the text effect.
To give you some ideas, on how something like this could be used here is an example with a fiery background and a few little Halloween graphics thrown in.
As you can image this text effect works great on Halloween advertisements, pamphlets and brochures. Also this will look great used in a forum signature or banner/header background as well.
